If the seat belt is buckled in, begin by unlatching. Lengthen the strap by pulling it away from the seat. Release the belt to disengage the auto-lock. Done correctly, the belt should retract into the space behind the seat. If it doesn’t retract, the belt could be entangled with its mechanism.
Step 2: Locate the Seat Belt Mechanism
The front seats’ mechanisms are located just behind the seat where the belt should retract. It will be protected by a plastic cover.
If the problem area is in the backseat, decline (not recline) the seat and locate the mechanism under the floor covers near your vehicle’s trunk or by the spare tire.
Step 3: Remove the Mechanism’s Plastic Covers
Using the necessary tools, remove the plastic covers. Afterward, you should be able to see the seat belt’s mechanism and whether or not the belt is entangled.
Step 4: Free the Seat Belt
The belt could either be tangled, the mechanism could be jammed, or both. Untangle the belt and remove objects that could be hindering the mechanism from retracting the belt. Be sure to remove everything that could hinder the mechanism from working properly again.
Step 5: Release and Let the Seat Belt Retract
If done correctly, the seat belt should retract once you give it a quick tug. Do this a number of times to make sure it retracts properly.
Step 6: Test the Auto-Lock
Once you’ve established that retraction is no longer an issue, try testing the auto-lock feature with a few strong pulls. The mechanism should lock once you pull at a certain force. Once that happens, test the retraction again.
Step 7: Place the Covers Back
Make sure that everything is back in order before you place the covers back over the mechanisms. Clean the area around it, and maintain it by going over this process from time to time.
